On Wednesday 6 November, I spoke in the Chamber to defend the postponement of the general renewal of the members of Congress and the provincial assemblies of New Caledonia.
This text, which was unanimously adopted by the Senate and is in line with the actions taken by the government, aims to enable the organisation of future provincial and congressional elections in New Caledonia under calm conditions and in accordance with the law.
This postponement was necessary in view of the situation in New Caledonia and the events of last spring, which led to the destruction of 6,000 jobs and the deaths of 13 people, including 2 gendarmes. These events made it impossible to hold the poll under the required conditions before the end of the year.
This postponement, which remains exceptional and transitional in nature, is a prerequisite for a lasting institutional solution, and should enable the whole of New Caledonia's political arc, as well as the State, to establish a new and peaceful institutional path for the future.
