Written Question 2868 - Voting rights in local elections following Brexit

Read my question to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs :

Mr Vincent Caure asks the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs about the recent loss of the right to vote in local elections for French nationals living in the UK since 3 May 2024, following Brexit. The British local authorities, which are responsible for the electoral register, are currently removing French nationals who arrived after 31 December 2020 from the register. Only nationals of European Union (EU) countries who arrived before that date, with the exception of Portugal, Poland, Spain, Denmark and Luxembourg, and who have signed bilateral agreements with the UK, retain their right to vote in local elections. This loss of rights has consequences that go beyond democratic participation, since being on the UK electoral register protects residents against fraud and, for example, has an impact on residents' credit ratings, making it easier for them to obtain mortgages or mobile phone contracts. In view of this situation, he would like to know whether the Government plans to enter into negotiations with the UK with a view to a bilateral agreement restoring reciprocal voting rights in local elections for French nationals in the UK and British nationals in France.
