As secretary of the commission of enquiry into the organisation of elections in France, I took the floor to question the Direction de l'Information Légale et Administrative (DILA) about the prospects for online voting.
I made a point of emphasising that, for French citizens living abroad, this voting method has largely established itself as a solution adapted to geographical and logistical constraints.
I pointed out that familiarity with online voting had helped to increase voter turnout and thus strengthen the legitimacy of the MPs for French people living abroad.
In this context, I questioned the DILA on several points :
- Is there scope for extending the use of online voting to other elections, in particular the European and presidential elections ?
- Are other ministries seeking feedback on online voting with a view to experimenting with it in mainland France ?
- Has online voting enabled new voters to cast their ballot, or is it essentially a substitution effect between voting methods ?
These discussions are essential if we are to anticipate the future of online voting and ensure easier access to the ballot box for all voters, both in France and abroad. I remain committed to defending solutions that simplify and strengthen the democratic participation of French citizens abroad.
