The National Assembly's Committee on European Affairs has adopted the motion for a European resolution that we tabled with my colleague Damien Girard, and co-signed by over 120 MEPs, in support of Denmark and Greenland.
This text is a firm response to a situation unprecedented since 1945: Donald Trump's repeated challenges to Danish sovereignty over Greenland. By repeatedly referring to his wish to ‘acquire’ this territory by force or through trade, the former American president is trampling on the fundamental principles of international law, and in particular the right of peoples to self-determination.
In the face of these threats, our resolution reaffirms the solidarity of France and the European Union with Denmark. It also calls on us to step up our dialogue with the Greenland authorities and to envisage concrete forms of support. This vote in committee marks a first victory for this cross-party initiative.
It illustrates our ability to rise above divisions to defend our shared values, support our allies and assert our sovereignty in strategic areas. In a world where the powers are competing more and more head-on for influence in the Arctic, this text is also a call to make European strategic autonomy a reality.
We will continue to support this resolution with determination, so that it can be widely adopted at the National Assembly.
