Minister's reply to my question on the recognition of medical qualifications obtained in the United Kingdom

Read the answer from the Minister for Health and Access to Care to my question on the recognition of medical qualifications obtained in the United Kingdom :

Since 1 January 2021, with the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (EU), automatic recognition of diplomas obtained across the Channel is no longer automatic, including for French doctors who began their training before Brexit. These professionals must now follow the equivalence procedure applicable to non-EU doctors, which involves tests to verify knowledge and passing a commission to authorise them to practise.

EU nationals who qualified before 1 January 2021 may continue to practise in other EU member states. The number of places available for the Epreuves de vérification des connaissances (EVC) has increased considerably. As a result, 4,000 positions have been opened in 2024, 1,300 more than in 2023. 3,235 candidates were admitted to the main list competition, compared with 2,205 in 2023, an increase of almost 50%. In addition, there are now 19,154 former practitioners with diplomas from outside the European Union registered with the Ordre des Médecins, compared with 7,963 in 2010, an increase of 141% in 15 years (more than 11,000 additional practitioners).

The Government has announced its intention to simplify the procedure for obtaining a licence to practise for all practitioners with qualifications from outside the European Union. Numerous simplifications have already been put in place following the Valletoux law. This simplification drive will continue, and French doctors graduating in the UK after Brexit will also benefit from these simplifications. In accordance with the announcement by the Minister for Health and Access to Care, consultations are underway to reform the EVC competitive examination, in particular by creating, from 2025, a simplified internal route for candidates already working in a French health establishment. These consultations are also aimed at providing better support for successful candidates as they consolidate their skills with a view to becoming fully qualified.
